Employment Updates

New leave rights for parents as to how they use maternity and paternity leave.

The government is proposing to change the law so that employed mothers will be able to transfer all or part of the last 26 weeks of maternity leave to the father. To the extent that this "additional paternity leave" is taken during the mother's 39 week maternity pay period, it would be paid at the same rate as SMP, currently £123.06.

A consultation on draft regulations is to be launched soon. Subject to consultation and parliamentary procedure, the Government intends that the law be in force by April 2010 and have effect for parents of children due on or after 3rd April 2011. More information

Employee Handbook

Producing an employee handbook or staff handbook for your company will help you to comply with the law and effectively communicate your policies and procedures.

Each time a policy is introduced or amended you must notify your employees, asking them to familiarise themselves with any relevant points. To enable your employees to do this you should either send copies to them or let them know where to find a copy, eg on your intranet. We can supply a standard Staff Handbook from our selection of HR Documents. An employee handbook can also be called a staff handbook or company handbook.

  • Make your employee handbook consistent with its intended readers
  • As a legal requirement your employee handbook may contain policies on disciplinary, equal opportunities, grievance and mobile phones (if not included in the contract of employment)
  • A staff handbook is a valuable reference document to aid recruitment, induction, training and communication
  • To help with the reading and understanding of the company handbook you may have to make provision, eg large print versions, translations etc.
  • If there is an existing staff handbook, does it need revising and updating?

Specific policies such as dress code, smoking policy, company car policy and staff benefits etc need to be thought through and can be designed specifically to fit your business requirements without affecting your employees rights under current employment law.

The hard work put into producing your staff handbook will be wasted unless you ensure that everyone receives a copy, a good way of monitoring this is to obtain employee signatures upon receipt.

An company handbook can lead to improved performance, a more efficiently run business and reduce the risk of being involved in costly employment tribunals and disputes.
